How to Discover God’s Blueprint for Your Life (It’s Not What You Think)

What if God’s plan for your life isn’t some mysterious, abstract thing you have to hunt down?

What if it’s been right in front of you this whole time — hidden in your story, your struggles, and the things you’ve already overcome?

Most of us spend years asking: “God, what’s Your plan for me? What’s my purpose? What am I supposed to be doing?”

We’re waiting for some grand revelation. A burning bush moment. A clear, detailed roadmap that shows us exactly where to go.

But what if the blueprint isn’t out there? What if it’s already in you?

What if discovering God’s plan isn’t about looking forward to some unknown future — but looking back at what He’s already brought you through?

Why Most People Never Discover Their Blueprint

You’re Waiting for a Plan That’s Already Being Revealed

Here’s what happens for most of us:

We think God’s blueprint is this big, mysterious thing we need to figure out before we can move forward.

So we wait. And wait. And wait.

We pray: “God, show me the plan. Tell me what to do. Give me clarity.”

And when we don’t get a lightning bolt moment, we assume He’s silent. That maybe He doesn’t have a plan for us. Or that we’re not spiritual enough to hear it.

But what if you’re looking for the wrong thing?

What if God’s been showing you the blueprint all along — not through visions or prophecies, but through your actual life?

You Think the Blueprint Has to Be Big and Spiritual

We’ve been told that God’s plan is always something massive. Ministry. Missionary work. Starting a nonprofit. Writing a bestselling Christian book.

And if your life doesn’t look like that, you think: Well, maybe God doesn’t have a big plan for me. Maybe I’m just supposed to live a normal life.

God’s blueprint for your life isn’t about what looks impressive to other people. It’s about what He’s equipped YOU specifically to do through what you’ve already been through.

Your purpose isn’t disconnected from your pain. It’s built from it.

The Real Reason You Can’t See It

You can’t see God’s blueprint because you’ve been dismissing your own story.

You think: “What I went through isn’t special. Everyone goes through hard things. Who would want to hear about my struggles?”

So you downplay your experiences. You minimize your growth. You overlook the very things God is trying to use.

Meanwhile, the blueprint has been forming your entire life — you just haven’t connected the dots yet.

The Blueprint Finally Made Sense

My Story: Building Without Realizing I Was Following a Plan

I started my first business at 23. Right after the 2008 real estate crash when my family lost everything.

I didn’t have some grand vision. I didn’t hear God say “Courtney, I’m calling you to build a tax business.”

I just knew what I wanted:

  • Money in the bank
  • The ability to travel
  • Not checking my account before swiping my card
  • Time with my future family

So I got clear on the experiences I wanted, and God started opening doors toward those experiences.

The tax industry showed up. I took it. I ran with it. And it worked.

For years, I worked 4 months, made 6 figures, then spent the other 8 months healing, traveling, volunteering, loving on people.

I thought I was just building a business. But looking back, God was revealing the blueprint the entire time.

He was showing me:

  • How to create the life experiences I wanted
  • How to build something from nothing
  • How to navigate personal healing while building professionally
  • How His hand was over every part of my journey

And then He said: “Now take everything you learned — personally and professionally — and show other people how to do the same.”

The Moment I Realized What the Blueprint Actually Was

For years, I thought God’s plan for my life was going to be something outside of what I was already doing.

Something spiritual. Something ministry-focused. Something that required me to leave my business and do “God’s work.”

But then He showed me: The blueprint isn’t separate from your life. It’s woven through everything you’ve already lived.

God’s plan for my life wasn’t abstract. It was simple:

Show people God’s goodness through your life experiences and your business experiences. Help them see that He meets you as you do life with Him — personally AND professionally.

That’s it.

Not some grand, disconnected calling. Just: Use what I’ve brought you through to help others navigate what they’re going through.

The Blueprint Method — How to Discover God’s Plan for Your Life

Step 1 – Look Back at What You’ve Been Through

Your blueprint isn’t in your future. It’s in your past.

  • What have you overcome that many people don’t come out of the same way?
  • What did you learn? Who did you become? What lessons did you gain that others are desperate to know?

Why This Step Matters

You’re looking for God’s plan in the wrong place. You’re looking ahead when you should be looking back.

The things you’ve survived, healed from, built through — those aren’t random. They’re preparation.

Quick Action You Can Take

Grab a notebook. Write down:

  • 5 major life challenges you’ve faced
  • What you learned from each one
  • Who you became because of them
  • How getting through it changed you

Don’t overthink it. Just write what comes to mind.

Step 2 – Identify Your Business or Professional Lessons

Now do the same thing with your professional life.

  • What have you built? What have you accomplished? What lessons did you learn the hard way in your career or business?
  • What do you know now that you wish someone had told you years ago?

Common Mistake to Avoid

Don’t dismiss your professional experiences as “just work.” Everything you’ve learned professionally is part of the blueprint too.

God doesn’t separate sacred and secular. He uses all of it.

Example in Action

For me, I learned:

  • How to build a business with no degree
  • How to create financial freedom
  • How to serve clients with integrity
  • How to navigate audits and challenges

Those weren’t random skills. They were preparation to help others do the same.

Step 3 – Find the Intersection: Where Personal + Professional Meet

Now here’s where it gets powerful.

Look at your personal life lessons and your professional life lessons. Where do they intersect?

How can what you learned in both areas serve other people?

Why This Step Matters

Your purpose isn’t one-dimensional. It’s not just your personal story or just your professional expertise.

It’s where the two come together and create something unique that only you can offer.

Quick Action You Can Take

Draw two circles that overlap (a Venn diagram). In one circle, list your personal life lessons. In the other, list your professional lessons.

In the middle where they overlap, write: “Who needs both of these things?”

That’s your blueprint.

Step 4 – Ask: What Would I Have Paid Someone to Help Me With?

Here’s the simplest way to identify your calling:

  • What would you have paid someone to help you navigate when you were going through it?
  • What do you wish someone had told you? What guidance were you desperate for that you couldn’t find?

Why This Step Matters

People aren’t looking for theories. They’re looking for solutions.

And you have solutions — because you lived through the problem and found your way out.

Exactly where you are now is where someone else is desperate to be.

Example in Action

When I was broken, building a business on the outside but falling apart on the inside, I would’ve paid someone to show me:

  • How to build a beautiful life from a broken place
  • How to do business with God, not just for yourself
  • How to heal while still building

That’s what I teach now. Not because it’s trendy. Because it’s what I needed — and what others need too.

Fast Wins — What You Can Do in the Next 7 Days

3 Actions You Can Take Now

  1. Spend 30 minutes writing down every major challenge you’ve overcome — personal and professional. Don’t filter. Just brain dump.
  2. Circle the 3 challenges that changed you the most. Ask yourself: What did I learn that others need to know?
  3. Text or call one person who’s going through something you’ve already been through. Share what helped you. Notice how it feels to walk them through it.

That feeling? That’s your blueprint coming alive.

What Happens When You Discover Your Blueprint

Real Results You Can Expect

  • You’ll finally understand why you went through what you went through
  • You’ll stop feeling like your struggles were wasted
  • You’ll see how God’s been preparing you all along
  • You’ll stop waiting for permission to start helping others
  • You’ll realize your story isn’t a liability — it’s your greatest asset

And here’s the most powerful part: You’ll stop building just for yourself and start building to serve others.

Your pain will have purpose. Your lessons will have impact. Your life will finally make sense.

The Cost of Ignoring Your Blueprint

If you keep waiting for God to reveal some grand, separate plan that has nothing to do with what you’ve already been through:

  • You’ll waste years waiting for clarity that’s already here
  • You’ll dismiss the very experiences God wants to use
  • You’ll miss the people who need exactly what you have to offer
  • You’ll look back and realize you were sitting on the blueprint the whole time

What I Want You to Remember

God’s plan isn’t out there. It’s in you.

The blueprint isn’t some abstract, disconnected calling. It’s your life experiences + your professional lessons + your unique journey with God.

Your purpose is built from what you’ve been through, not separate from it.

Everything you’ve survived, overcome, learned, built — it’s all been preparing you for this moment.

You’re not waiting to discover the blueprint. You’re living it right now.

Special Resources Based on Where You Are

If you’ve already built a successful life but realize the foundation has cracks:

Maybe you’re winning publicly but struggling privately. You’re cutting corners, operating without full integrity, dealing with secret struggles.

There’s no judgment here. That was me too.

Action: Audit your foundation. Ask yourself: If God was my business partner, would He sign off on how I’m operating right now? Where do you need to rebuild?

If you have no idea where to start:

Maybe you can’t even think about God’s plan because you’re just trying to survive. Bills, debt, heartbreak, chaos — you’re overwhelmed.

Action: Write down everything you’ve been through and how it affected you. Then invite God into each thing and ask Him to heal those spaces first. The blueprint comes after the healing.

If you’re somewhere in between:

You know God has a plan, but you can’t see it clearly yet.

Action: Complete the exercises in this post. Map out your personal lessons + professional lessons. Find where they intersect. Ask who needs what you’ve learned.
